WBW#33 – Wine Blogging Wednesday #33 – Languedoc-Roussillon Value Wines: Laurent Miquel, “La Vérité”, 2005

Van wijn

For my entry, I chose the Cuvée Vérité, made by Laurent Miquel in his Languedoc Vineyards. Only 3000 bottles are made of this classy wine.

The grapes for the Vérité come from very low yielding plots that benefit from the cooling effect of the nearby Orb river and Cevennes mountain range. They only use selected juice from the press in order to ensure a pure, delicate flavor and enhance the elegance of the cuvée.
The selection process continues in the cellar as selected barrels are tasted many times with the objective of selecting only the best for this wine.

Jancis Robinsons calls this wine a ‘baby-Condrieu’. The wine itself is powerful, yet elegant. A complex wine, with wood, apricot, vanilla, hay and honey aromas. The wine is very well balanced, a pleasure to drink!

An outstanding wine for 17€.

Thanks Maarten. I’m always on the lookout for a good well-balanced Viognier. Some can be quite alcoholic with 13.5% usually being the norm, I’d say. Is this one standard in its level of alcohol?

I tracked down the Jancis reference. Your bottle must be the more upscale rendering. Sounds wonderful.

By the way, Laurent must be related to Henri Miquel. Henri makes a Viognier under the Ch. Cazal Viel label which is by far the best Viognier of this price range in Quebec. It’s $17.50.

Just one last question: Is this table wine or is it AOC Coteaux du Languedoc or Vin de pay d’Oc? The front label doesn’t say. I suppose it could even be the newly announced AOC Languedoc — a sweeping appellation still in transition — though I’ve yet to see one such bottle.

    Marcus
